Diwali or the “Festival of Lights” is an important Hindu festival that is meant to celebrate Rama’s return from exile after fighting and winning a battle against demons. Upon his return the people lit their houses to celebrate his victory and welcome him home. The goddess Lakshmi also plays a part in celebrations as she’s said to enter homes that are pure and full of light.
Though celebrations differ in each community, this festival celebrates goodness and light, and a number of lamps, fireworks, candles, and bonfires, are used to illuminate homes and the local streets during festivities. It also marks the beginning of the fiscal year in India.
